Something in flower bed that has a root -but the top is a potato looking thing?

I need help-This is my first flower bed and these two pod looking things are a bit strange and actually kinda scary looking. When you touch it red dirt comes out of it.

If it is not a dried tuber it could be what is called " the devil's snuff" which is a fungi growth full of dust.
Reply:An upside down potato plant from last year? ;D Did you turn the soil over .? The "pod" might actually be a root of some kind . My first guess would be a dahlia root . Dried up, they could look pod-like , %26amp; the insides are powdery and reddish-brown . A Puffball (type of mushroom) would do that , but by time it dries out wouldn't be rooted in . Need more detail . Just get rid of it.
