.....a rumour put about by the tight slimy b@stards so they don't have to pay for any drinks?
Does burying tubs full of beer in your flower beds really trap and kill slugs and snails or is it just........
Yes your are correct snails and slugs are tight slimy b@stards who never pay for a drink, no pockets. Think about it.
However they are hopless alcoholics and will fall into the tub of beer and drown, drunk and happy, but I much prefer to squish them under foot.
Big heavy boots are best, carpet slippers not very good.
Reply:It does work... you have to fill up a ice cream/butter tub and fill it with beer. The slugs climb in, get drunk, can't get out and drown.
I don't think you havr to bury them by the way.
Reply:tes it does thats what i put down every year the slugs get in as like it then drowned works wanders anne uk
Reply:It does. Though it's better to use small saucers - this way you can spend just a can of beer or less to kill numerous slugs!
A saucer should be buried so that its rim is one level with the ground. Slugs smell beer, come closer, drink some, like it, then drink some more, and some more, and finally they have to get their front halves in the saucer to reach the beer, and then they fall in the saucer and cannot get out, and they get drowned. Hooray!
Reply:It works very, very well but then you have drunk slugs to deal with. Not a pretty picture. Easier to just hire a gardener.
Reply:it works,a tub or container with beer in it,resting on the ground, the snails and slugs love the smell and taste, get drunk, fall in and drown,i kid ye not.
Reply:Yes it works. They're commonly called slug pubs. You only need a thing the size of a margaine tub and fill it with the most rubbish beer you can get. Don't waste money on good stuff. Slugs aren't choosy, they'll drink American Budweiser or Boddington's foamy (sorry, creamflow) muck.
They crawl in, and drown. Only downside is that you have to clear out a rather nast slimy mush each morning.
Not only that, but slugs don't pay for their drinks either, except with their lives.
Get a hedgehog. They drink water (never give them milk, it kills them) and they'll eat your slugs for you.
Reply:Yes it does, my mom used to do that all the time when she had a garden and trouble with the buggers in her tomatoes. She would just make a shallow indentation in the dirt then set a tinfoil pie pan in it with beer. I have no idea why it works but it did
Reply:Yup it works, but only if you use real ale - don't bother with lager or 'beer' it just won't work.
Another way of stopping the little burgers getting to your plants (if they are in pots) is to put a ring of copper tape around your pot - apparantly the copper reacts with their moist bellies - shame.
Reply:yes but expect a lot of surly drunken invertebrates beforehand
Reply:The smell of beer attracts them they want some they try to get at it and fall in and drown.
Reply:LMAO
Nope it really works hun.
They are tight and so head straight for it, then drown
HA GOT YOU! YOU LITTLE BLEEDER! (mutters- trying to eat all my feckin plants will you?) LOL
Reply:why kill these critters.
oh look at my beautiful flowers which i killed for.
Reply:I know an elderly woman, a keen gardener, who catches them with a steep-sided pot and not a lot of beer - just enough for them to fall into. But you still have to dispose of them. She covers the tub lightly so that it is not unsightly, leaving space for them to slither under the lid, following the scent. It sounds gruesome, but no more so than other ways of dealing with them, and not harmful to the environment. Unless the loss of a few slugs harms it.
Reply:slugs, snails and wandering drunks!
Reply:Some of you have lost the plot, regarding this `slug extermination method`. You don`t use good beer, you either collect the beer left in cans/glasses after a party. Or you use `past its` sell by date` beer. Pour it into empty yogurt containers, but only half fill the tub/container, then bury it in the soil, so that the top of the tub is at ground level. The slug falls into the tub, sups the beer, gets drunk and can`t get out of the tub. It isn`t the drinking of the beer that kills it, it is being unable to get out of the tub, because it is inhebriated, it therefore drowns. If it was able to get out, it would have a hangover from the beer, but that is all. Incidently it also works with flat cola in stead of beer.
Reply:just attracts tramps
Reply:use yougart cartons with something over the top to keep the rain out and renew every evening
Reply:Yes, it does work, they are attracted to the sugar in the brew, just put a saucer full around your flowers or veg--(you could also use eggshells or anything sharp--glass or crockery will do)...no need for a tub full of the stuff though--what a waste!! SPIRITWALKER is also correct about the salt, pour some on one of the little fecker's and watch as it turns inside out...bloody amazin what sodium can do!! I would rather waste salt than beer anyday! Also--if you are into fishing, they make good bait!
Reply:Not tubs a saucer of Guiness will do,it is a fact. or Heineken because it reaches the parts that other beers can`t reach!Like Double Diamonds they work wonders `n` it`s cheaper than the harmful pellets you can buy,at least if a cat licks the beer the only thing they will have in the morning would be a hangover! whereas with pellets you could end up with a vets bill!
Reply:no it is actually true the slugs and snails fall into the beer trap, drink themselves stupid can't get out and die happy.
Or at least until they wake up in slug or snail heaven with a dirty great big hangover.
Alka selzter please!!!
Reply:It does work, just keep a cover over it to prevent the rain watering down the beer, you don't need a full can an inch or so of beer in the bottom is sufficient.
You will know when it needs emptying as it will give off a rather noxious pong! That plus the fact you'll be noticing more slugs in the garden!
Reply:Yep it really works (but shhhhh...don't tell the little blighters)
Sink a shallow jar so the top is flush with the ground. Fill the trap with beer, regular or nonalcoholic to 1/2 inch from the top and wait for the slugs to fall in and drown. A recent survey on what kind of beer slugs like best tells us they prefer Budweiser, Bud light, Coors light, Michelob and Old Milwaukee.
I don't know how many snails and slugs they surveyed, but I've been using stale beer for years, and 90% of mine said the dregs of any beer are delicious.
Reply:Cider works best. You only need a small saucer or some other receptacle to put close to the plants you are trying to protect.
Slug pellets are effective, but birds are often killed when they eat the slugs.
Reply:It really does work, the cheaper the beer the better. The nastiest part of this method is emptying the slug filled tubs, they get all slimy and gelatenous.
Reply:yes, part fill a jar or other straight sided container with beer and water mix, bury it so the top is about a cm obove the ground level, next morning there will be a lot of snails and slugs drowned, goes to show that drinking is bad for health.
Reply:What?!! You would pour your beer away? Blimey, don't do it. I'll have it.
Thanks.
Reply:Yes, I told my neighbour to bury 6 intact cans a night, for a week, this was g'teed to rid his garden of slugs.
It didnt because I dug them up as he buried them and drank the lot.
He still hasnt worked out how a few slugs could dig up and carry away all those cans.
My neighbour is a Brummy!!!
Reply:Yes it does work and the little so and so's die happy.
Reply:Why would you waste the beer? If you drink the full tub of beer then you won't care about your flower beds.
Reply:It is not a rumour
slugs and snails love the aroma of beer!
They are so attracted to beer , that in order
to lap up as much as they can!!
and in order to do that ,they will put themselves in dire peril , to get to at every last drop .
Despite numerous "Drink and Drowning " warnings,
in the media !!!!!
they , unfortunately drown in the stuff .
A happy slug ,is one that dies through drink .
Hedgehogs, who happen to love slugs and snails , relish
these mollusc's, marinated in beer
They gobble up , at least one over the eight!
i have often seen, disgracefully , tipsy hedgehogs ,
meandering , their wobbly route home, from the "slug pub ".
in the wee small hours.
We who supply the "slug pubs " are guilty of mass murder .
Or maybe a kindly form ,of mollusk euthanasia
